Launched in 2023 by The Queer Muslim Project with support from the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity, the QueerFrames Screenwriting Lab celebrates and nurtures queer talent behind the camera, equipping them with the tools, resources, and networks to tell stories that drive meaningful change.
Since its inception, we have supported 22 queer writers and writer-directors from South Asia and its diaspora.
In 2026, the Lab expands into Southeast Asia, further amplifying diverse voices and strengthening regional exchange.

A space for queer filmmakers to build craft and community
The QueerFrames Screenwriting Lab connects emerging writers and writer-directors with leading industry mentors, offering guidance on craft, storytelling, and navigating careers in film. We provide rigorous script development for fiction feature films, alongside access to film markets, industry networks, and professional opportunities. The Lab fosters a supportive creative community built through peer exchange, shared learning, and collaboration.
What the lab offers
Because queer storytelling needs sustained support
Beyond The Lab
At QueerFrames, we invest in fellows, not just their projects, supporting their creative and professional growth beyond the Lab. Fellows continue to access tailored consultations with industry experts, short film and proof-of-concept funding, pitch training, market exposure, and further development opportunities.
Across cohorts, alumni work has gone on to screen at leading festivals including BFI Flare, Frameline, and Iris Prize, with fellows also selected for programmes such as TorinoFilmLab (Green Narratives), Genre Film Lab, Creative Asia (Busan International Film Festival), and the WAVES Film Bazaar Co-Production Market.
