FrequentlyAsked Questions
Who can apply?
We are looking for 8 emerging queer and trans writer-directors from South Asia, Southeast Asia, and their diasporas, representing a wide range of lived experiences, identities, and artistic voices.
Applicants must be over 18 years of age, hold a valid passport, and be proficient in English to ensure smooth communication throughout the Lab.
For projects with more than one writer, only one representative – ideally the lead writer – may apply and participate in the Lab.
What projects are eligible?
We accept original fiction feature scripts (first or second) in early development. Adaptations, documentaries, shorts, and TV/web series are not eligible.
Projects must demonstrate a clear connection to South or Southeast Asia—through theme, character, language, or setting—and explore queerness as an integral part of the storytelling, not an incidental element.
We welcome genre-driven and audience-facing work, including horror, comedy, crime and suspense, drama, and BL/GL, as well as coming-of-age and character-driven stories that can travel widely, engage audiences, and reshape how queer lives are seen on screen.
All submissions must be in English. While your film can be in any language, the logline, synopsis, and script must be provided in English.
While not mandatory, we strongly encourage applicants to register their scripts with relevant local bodies, wherever possible, for their own protection.
Eligibility
What do I need to include in my application?
Your application should include the following materials:
- Basic contact and demographic information
- Artist Statement (max 400 words): Describe your motivation for applying, along with your background, experience, and key creative influences
- Statement of Intent (max 200 words): Outline your creative vision for the project and your personal connection to the story
- Logline (max 30 words): Provide a clear, one- to two-sentence description of your project
- Synopsis (max 750 words): Present a detailed summary of the narrative, including main characters, key story beats, and the ending
- Screenplay Sample: Submit a complete draft of your feature script, or the first 20 pages if a full draft is not yet available.
- Previous Work Samples: Include links or files showcasing relevant creative work, such as short films, writing samples, or visual projects
Shortlisted applicants (if not already submitted) will be required to provide a full script within 10 days.
How will my application be assessed?
The application process consists of two stages: a written submission, followed by video interviews for shortlisted applicants.
Submissions will be reviewed by a panel of QueerFrames team members and external industry experts. Applications will be evaluated based on:
- Story & Audience Potential: Fresh, compelling narratives with the ability to engage and resonate with wider audiences
- Creative Vision: Original, emotionally resonant storytelling that explores queerness with depth, nuance, and authenticity, demonstrating a clear creative voice and commitment to developing the work
- Regional Relevance: A meaningful connection to South or Southeast Asia through theme, character, language, setting, or cultural context
Technical Skills: Familiarity with screenwriting fundamentals; prior experience in filmmaking or visual storytelling (such as a short film, script, or related work) is preferred
Will I receive feedback if my application is unsuccessful?
Due to the high volume of applications, we are unable to provide individual feedback on unsuccessful submissions. We appreciate your time and interest in the Lab, and we strongly encourage applicants to reapply in the future.
Application Process
What are the key dates for the Lab?
Applications open on June 1, 2026, and close on July 5, 2026. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed in August, with finalists informed by the end of the month.
The in-person residency will take place from September 25 to October 6, 2026, followed by an online programme running from October 2026 to February 2027. Core sessions will be held virtually every Friday, with additional feedback sessions and industry masterclasses scheduled on select weekdays between 5:30 and 8:30 PM IST.
A detailed agenda and timetable will be shared with selected Fellows ahead of the Lab.
Is full participation in the Lab mandatory?
Attendance is mandatory for both the in-person residency and the full online programme, including weekly sessions, masterclasses, peer feedback, and writing assignments. Please apply only if you can commit the required time and energy—not only to your own growth, but to actively support the learning and development of your peers.
Selected Fellows will be required to sign an agreement confirming their full participation in all in-person and virtual Lab sessions.
Lab Timeline & Participation
What financial support is provided to participants?
There is no participation fee for the Lab. Accommodation, meals, and local transport during the in-person residency are fully covered. The exact location will be shared with selected participants.
International travel and visa costs are not covered. However, a limited number of travel scholarships (full or partial) are available for participants based in South and Southeast Asia, awarded on the basis of financial need. Please indicate your requirement clearly in the application form.
Applicants based in the diaspora are encouraged to seek external funding (e.g. arts councils, cultural institutions, or LGBTQIA+ organisations). Where possible, we will support selected participants in identifying additional funding opportunities.
Applying for a travel scholarship has no bearing on the selection process.
Financial Support
Who owns the IP to my script?
You retain full ownership of your script. The QueerFrames Screenwriting Lab does not claim any IP rights unless a separate production or financing agreement is made.
Are there any credit requirements if my screenplay is produced?
If your screenplay is produced after the Lab, you are required to include a credit and logo for the QueerFrames Screenwriting Lab in the film’s end credits.
The credit should read: “This film was supported by the QueerFrames Screenwriting Lab,” accompanied by the Lab’s logo.
Intellectual Property & Credit
What post-Lab opportunities are available, and how are projects selected for further support?
All Fellows leave the Lab with a stronger draft, clearer creative direction, and an ongoing network of peers and collaborators.
After completing the Lab, select projects may be considered for continued support through QueerFrames’ advanced development initiatives, including expert guidance, pitch coaching, short film and proof-of-concept funding, and opportunities for industry and festival exposure.
Projects are reviewed on an ongoing basis, based on creative strength, originality, and readiness for the next stage of development. This includes progress made during the Lab, as well as overall potential, feasibility, and alignment with QueerFrames’ vision. Alumni projects may be considered at different stages of development.
